Integrated research to reduce the threat of urban gullies in Central Africa
Urban gullies are rapidly growing problem in many tropical cities of the Global South. In particular, the Democratic Republic of Congo has been severely affected, where these gullies wreak havoc on homes and infrastructure, often result in casualties, and pose a constant threat to millions of people.
The 2018-2024 ARES-PRD research project PREMITURG (“Prevention and Mitigation of Urban Gullies: Lessons Learned from Failures and Successes”) aimed to address these challenges by strengthening the capacity of Congolese universities and other stakeholders to mitigate the risks and impacts of this emerging geo-hydrological hazard.
The scientific findings and implications of this research will be presented during the defenses of two PhD studies conducted within the PREMITURG framework:
- On 28 October 2024, at 10:15 AM, Eric Lutete Landu will defend his PhD titled: Effectiveness of Measures Aiming to Stabilize Urban Gullies in Tropical Cities: Lessons Learned from Failures and Successes in the D.R. Congo.
- On 29 October 2024, at 9:45 AM, Guy Ilombe Mawe will defend his PhD titled: Urban Gullies in the Democratic Republic of the Congo: Susceptibility, Expansion Rates, and Impacts.
Both PhD defenses will take place at the Royal Museum for Central Africa (Meeting Room 1, Welcome Pavilion, Leuvensesteenweg 13, 3080 Tervuren, Belgium), with an option to attend online. Click on the documents below for detailed information.
